Cruciate Surgery

There are a 2 main techniques we employ, taking into account your pet’s size, activity level and age. The simpler, extracapsular technique (Lateral Fabella Tie), involves implanting heavy gauge nylon through bone tunnels to replace the action of the torn ligament. It is an excellent choice for cats and dogs less than 20kg, though can be used in dogs up to 30kg in certain circumstances. Osteotomy techniques are generally a better option for dogs larger than 30kg as once healed, the stability and robustness of the procedure is independent of their size. We use the Modified Marquet Tibial Tuberosity Advancement technique or MMP TTA for short. This involves inserting a porous titanium wedge into the bone just below the knee joint. The dog’s bone grows into the implant so that it becomes part of the bone structure and modifies the biomechanical properties of the joint to circumvent the problems associated with a ruptured cruciate ligament.
